Below are companies you should know offering summer internship opportunities in STEM

Statistically speaking, minorities tend to be underrepresented in STEM fields. That’s why corporations often create designated internship opportunities for minorities entering the industry. As the job market is becoming more competitive in addition to GPA and personal achievements, employers want to see applicants who have completed one or more internships.

That’s why we’ve highlighted below some of the many internships for minorities in STEM fields.

Small Satellite Lab Instrumentation Testing

Location: Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) Wallops Island, Virginia

Apply Here

NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) paid internships allow high school and college-level students to contribute to the agency’s mission to advance science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration.

OSTEM internships offer students an opportunity to gain practical work experience while working side-by-side with mentors who are research scientists, engineers, and individuals from many other professions. Internships may be full-time or part-time, and they may be on a NASA center or facility or even working from your home or dorm.

Hybrid Electric Aircraft Propulsion

Location: Glenn Research Center Cleveland, Ohio

Apply Here

NASA Glenn Research Center is conducting research in the area of electrified aircraft propulsion systems, which combine turbofan engines and electrical machines to generate propulsive thrust. This research includes developing system models to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of these innovative propulsion designs. Through this opportunity, the intern will work with NASA personnel to develop and evaluate electrified aircraft propulsion systems. This work will predominately be conducted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment using propulsion and electrical system models. Tasks to be performed include the evaluation of the NASA Matlab toolbox for the power system model and improving the performance of the hybrid turbofan system model. If possible, hardware-in-the-loop testing could be included in the assessment. Addresses Areas of Expertise of Air-Breathing Propulsion; Power, Energy Storage, and Conversion.

Climate Change in Hudson Estuary

Location: Goddard Institute for Space Studies New York, New York

Registration End Date: 7/1/24

Apply Here

The Hudson Estuary is comprised of key tidal marshes, which provide many ecosystem services to the large population of this important coastal region, including NYC. These services include fish nurseries, coastal protection, water purification, paleoclimatic archives, and carbon sequestration repositories. We seek to understand the records of past droughts, cold intervals, floods, and vegetation shifts, along with the past shifts in carbon storage. From this information, we can better understand our present snapshot of climate/carbon and predict future accumulation rates as climate warms and sea levels rise.

Land Surface Temperature via Satellite and Remote Sensing

Location: Goddard Insitute for Space Studies New York, New York

Registration End Date: 7/1/24

Apply Here

For this project, students will perform a local, intensive, and comprehensive surface energy balance data collection and processing initiative to help characterize the urban heat island, the heat index, and, more particularly, the land surface temperature over various local community-built and natural environments.

The project aims to produce high temporal and spatial resolution land surface temperatures for the local community and New York City using the combination of satellite remote sensing observations and ground-based measurements. Students will obtain remote sensing data from multiple polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.

Monitoring and Studying Lakes from Space in a Changing Climate

Location: Goddard Insitute for Space Studies New York, New York

Registration End Date: 7/1/2024

Apply Here

This project, focuses on the application of satellite remote sensing and geographic information system techniques complimented by ground observations to study lakes and to provide insights about “lake-health” and about “lake-response” to the adverse impacts of climate change. Interns will obtain and analyze satellite data from geostationary and polar orbiting satellites such as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R), LandSat, ECOSTRESS, Sentinel 2A, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), etc.

SnowEX and Understanding Role of Snow and Measurements

Location: Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, Maryland

Registration End Date: 2/16/2024

Apply Here

The intern will contribute to the development of the SnowEx meteorological data archive. This includes evaluating data collected during the 2017 – 2020 snow seasons for errors and assisting in formatting and analysis to prepare the data for archival. The candidate should have some experience with data analysis and scripting. Experience working in snow research is highly desired. The candidate will also help prepare metadata, charts and presentation material to introduce the data to the larger snow community.

These are just a few of NASA’s Summer Internships, you can find the full list of Summer Internships here. If you missed the deadline for Summer 2024 internships, don’t fret, there are several Fall 2024 internships available.
